MikeBlogging SXSW: Austin and Book Readings
I’ve decided to blog about SXSW… only when I feel like it, however. I’ll call it “mikeblogging.”
Impressions so far:
Austin, Texas
Nice people, flat land, big driveways. It seems like a cliche caracature of itself; everything you’d expect Texas to be is here. I got off the plane (which flew over about half a dozen rodeos) and there was a store with gigantic longhorns right at the end of the terminal. There was some country song playing, and I was passed by a guy in a gigantic cowboy hat. I’m still waiting to see an armadillo.
SXSW Book Reading: Pro Javascript Design Patterns
The book readings are all 20 minutes long, so they don’t fit too much in. I thought the author was okay, the topic was way too indepth to do anything with in 20 minutes. I probably won’t buy the book, but I’ll check it out in Barnes and Noble to see if I’m swayed.
SXSW Book Reading: The Principles of Beautiful Web Design
The author was super nervous, and I probably won’t buy the book because design books generally give me headaches that put me out for about 2 weeks. That said, I thought the presentation was well put together. I really got a feel for what the book teaches in terms of a step-by-step approach. Great use of time, not so great execution of such time.

SXSW Book Reading: Building Findable Websites
Best of the “book reading” genre so far. Great presenter, great topic, lots of resources. Didn’t focus much at all on SEO - I’d say that his main point was summed up in the slide, “web standards + compelling content = findability bliss”. He talked a lot about accessibility and microformats, 2 things that I’ll be keeping an eye out for during the rest of the conference.

I am now going off to explore and try and catch some more panels. I also opened up my twitter to the public and that will be coming through on Tumblr now for the 2 people that read this blog (me and zarzecks) to check out. I know half the people can’t wait.
